As much as we like to think of adolescence as a time of rebellion, the truth of the matter is that while we “rebel” against our parents, we conform to our peers more than at any other time in our lives. Peer pressure is a powerful force. And one that every parent should be concerned about.
You were a kid once. Didn’t you ever do anything stupid just because one of your friends encouraged you to? Me too. So that’s why it’s doubly important that we help your daughter understand peer pressure and how to deal with it.
Preadolescence and adolescence are very important times of growth in your daughter’s life as that is when she begins to figure out for herself what she truly believes. While we can provide her with excellent examples at home, we can’t always control what she gets exposed to at school or in the media. When your daughter is struggling to find herself and craft an identity that is uniquely hers, we need to make sure we are providing her with positive role models. Girls on the Run and other empowering after school activities are a great place to start, but what else can you do?
